There are three forms of income: earned (thy wage), portfolio (capital gains, dividends, interest), and passive (royalties, rents, business cashflows that require no active labor).

The poor have only earned. The middle class has earned and a slice of portfolio. The rich have all three, with passive eclipsing the others.

Set a goal: by year three, have measurable income from each of the three buckets. Even $50/month from a side venture is the first stone of the second pillar. Even $20/month in dividends is the seed of the third.
